1.Be the pack leader
You want to be the pack leader, if your dog controls you on the walk, he´s the pack leader. You should always be the first one who goes out of the door and the first one in. Your dog should be beside or behind you during walktime.
Here are the first steps to teach your dog how to walk beside you:
- Have your dog on a long lead (at least 2m)
- Stand still and let the dog go to the end of the lead
- keep your hand close to your hip
- wait until the lead slackens the tiniest bit
- call your dog and reward with a treat at your knee
2.Use a short dog lead
Holding your dog on a short lead gives you more control and helps with communication. If you have a “puller” on your hands and need additional help, consider the Sporn dog training halter:

But always keep your dog´s safety in mind when giving corrections.
3.Give yourself enough time for walks
We recommend setting aside thirty minutes to a full hour. The specific needs of each dog differ. Consult your vet and keep an eye on your dog’s behavior to see if his needs are being met.
4.Don´t forget rewards
When your dog is walking by your side or behind you, reward him by allowing him to relieve himself and sniff around. You are the pack leader so you decide when reward time is over. It should always be less than the time spent focused on the walk.
If your pub is motivated mostly by food, don´t forget to carry their favorite treats:Our favourite treats
The DOOG Walking belt is one of our best walking accessories to carry the much needes items for walkies. Again when your dog is walking well, reward with a treat and introduce an instruction such as “heel”.Get the DOOG here!
5.Keep leading, even after the walk
Don’t stop leading when you get home. Have your dog sit and wait patiently while you put away his lead or take off your shoes. This again shows your authority as pack leader and let´s Fido know that he doesn´t always come first even at home.
